We stopped in for coffee and a pastry. The owner Nona actually served us. She is a very pleasent and cheerful woman. The homemade pastries were good, nothing spectacular. I perused the lunch menu, average fare but did not see anything stand out. I did purchase a jar of homemade pumpkin butter. Excited to try it on some scones that I will make at home.

The sweetest coffee shop I've ever been to! The pastries and tea are delicious and the owner is the kindest and most welcoming man! He gave us several free samples and wanted to make sure that our breakfast was "just right!" He also gave us a warm welcome to Milwaukee and tips for the area. Will definitely come back!

Delicious home-made food at a restaurant in SM. The french toast, puff pastry breakfast, espresso is all the best breakfast I've had in SM hands down. This is more of what I'd expect to find on the east or west coast. Real honest to goodness food backed by fabulous hosts / owners.

Food you wish your Mom would have cooked for you. Down-home cooking from scratch using locally-sourced ingredients. Normally open for just breakfast and lunch, Nona's extends it's hours on Friday to honor the venerable fish fry tradition in Wisconsin. Here, the fish fry has special status. Nona's serves baked or fried cod or deep-fried shrimp for just $7. Home-baked rye rolls, home-made cole slaw with pineapple along with a choice of steak fries, potato pancakes or kluski noodles. Seriously delicious food at a terrific price. The cafe has a small town warmth and folksiness that brings people back again and again. Amazing scratch bakery and daily specials like Sicilian steak, lasagna made with local Italian sausage and house-made cheeses all add more to the yum factor of this charming neighborhood cafe. Tom and Ida Spack operate this definitive Mom and Pop business. They are the sole employes of Nona's Cafe in South Milwaukee, a place you should visit soon!

Nona's deserves a six star rating! I came here by chance after reading good reviews on yelp and couldn't be happier that I did. I've traveled all over the country and eaten at more breakfast joints and diners than I can remember...and this place ranks as THE best! Homemade raisin bread french toast and locally sourced meat...great coffee...super comfy atmosphere...even the music they were playing was great! To a road weary traveler it really felt like home. Ida and Tom, the owners, are so down to earth and welcoming...truly nice folks. Highly, highly recommended!

Enjoyable vist. Friendly locals, Tom running from table to table looking somewhat harried, and Ida running the show, chatting and smiling, making you feel at home in her space. My aunt and my wife each ordered baked oatmeal and have been trying to recreate it ever since. I had a generous small chef's salad, not very attractively presented, but with a rye roll it did the trick. If we're back in the area, we would stop by because of its homey feel and to chat with "Nona." Good coffee.

Quite possibly the friendliest customer service in Milwaukee. The food itself is not so bad either, but probably receives any extra star considering the limited options in the area. Although I wouldn't stop by again unless I was in the area and had to stop, I would recommend it to people who are in the area and need a quick place for lunch or dinner. A typical casual diner with made to order food and basic coffee options. Unfortunately, the coffee competition is quite stiff in Milwaukee. Bottom Line: I would eat here if I was hungry and didn't want to drive a little further north into the city.

Nona's Cafe is in a fantastic location with great decor. Their ordering, menu, and payment style is a bit chaotic for a first-time diner. You stand at the counter to order and get your drinks, then seat yourself to wait for your meal. Nona herself is a wonderfully warm and inviting person. We talked at length about different topics before sitting down to dine. I ordered a puff pastry filled with egg and vegetables, covered in cheese. I was dismayed to recieve a very large square of puff pastry with another large square of American cheese melted across the top. Please don't think me a terrible snob, but it was the American cheese that really ruined this dish for me. The puff pastry was much, much larger than the egg filling and quite crumbly and dry to boot. A smaller portion of pastry and real Wisconsin cheese would improve this dish immensely. I drank several cups of coffee while trying to get it down, but ended up getting some cinnamon sugar to try to make the pastry palatable. Puff pastry frivolties aside, Nona's Cafe is a really friendly place to eat. The baked goods selection is generous, as is the espresso and coffee selection. The coffee is made instantly from a dispensing machine so it's always fresh. A sunny spot by the window, a few friends, and a non-discriminating palate may be the keys to really enjoying this restaurant. In spite of my hatred of American cheese, I hope this cafe sticks around a long time.
